About Guinness on draught

Guinness is the keg people ask for most, and it is the one that needs the most care to pour. Properly served it comes out of the tap in a slow surge, settles into a black body with a tight cream head, and drinks smooth and dry with roasted malt and a little bitterness at the end. At 4.1 per cent it is not a strong drink, which is part of why a keg of it disappears at a party.

A 30 litre keg pours about 52 pints and suits a home bar or a birthday where stout is one choice among a few. The 50 litre keg pours about 88 pints and is the one for a wedding, a wake or a St Patrick's Day do where everyone is on it.

What you need to pour Guinness

  • Coupler: Guinness Draught kegs supplied in the UK usually take an A-type coupler. If you have your own kit, tell us what coupler you have and we will check before we deliver.
  • Tap: A stout tap with a restrictor plate in the spout, run on 70/30 mixed gas from your gas supplier. Pour at a 45 degree angle, let it settle, then top up.

Running your own bar? Couplers, taps and line are under Parts and accessories on the price list. Or hire a pump or full bar and we set it all up for you in Bradford.

Guinness questions

Which coupler does a Guinness keg need?

In the UK, Guinness Draught kegs usually take an A-type coupler. Some sources say U-type because that is what Irish and American kegs use. If you are using your own kit, tell us what coupler you have when you order and we will check before we deliver to Bradford.

Can I pour Guinness with ordinary CO2?

You can, but it will not look or taste right. Guinness is designed for 70/30 mixed gas and a stout tap, which give it the creamy head and the slow surge. We do not supply gas, but we can supply the tap and set up a hire pump for stout.

How long does a Guinness keg last once it is open?

Kept cold and under gas, a tapped keg stays good for weeks, not days. Guinness is a little more sensitive than lager because of the nitrogen, so keep the gas on and the lines clean and it will pour well for the duration.
